ALL ABOUT AGAPANTHUS!
It’s no wonder the Chelsea Flower Show have named the Agapanthus ‘Black Jack’ their favourite plant of 2023, this perennial powerhouse deserves recognition! Swaying on thick, tall stems, the large spherical flower heads of the Agapanthus plant range from shades of dark blue to white and are a very reliable summer flowering blub that will reward us with blooms year after year!
Adding Agapanthus to your garden is so easy! Simply pick your favourite variety from our plant department, pot it up or dig it in to your beds and borders and enjoy their glorious blooms long into late autumn.
Drought tolerant
Perfect for sunny gardens, the Agapanthus plant won’t suffer from frequent exposure to sunshine. Meaning you don’t need to worry about topping it up with water during the warmer months like you usually would for summer bedding and basket plants.
Best for containers
Agapanthuses thrive in pots and containers as they love having restricted roots. If you give your plant too much space to grow, it may not flower. Unlike other perennials that may suffer from being pot bound, your Agapanthus will enjoy some slight neglect! We recommend potting around 2-3 plants per 45cm pot.
Lift and split
Once well established, you can lift and split your Agapanthus plant to create more blooms! Simply take a sharp knife or spade and divide your plant in two. This is best done in early spring or late autumn and once done simply replant your divided parts and watch them bloom the following growing season.
Cut for your vases
Cut from the base of the stem and bring your blooms indoors! Creating a homegrown posy inside will reward you with indoor blooms whilst also encouraging a second flush of flowers from your plant. The Agapanthus can flower for several weeks, pushing out bloom after bloom, frequently snipping older flower heads off the plant will encourage more flowers.
Perfect for pollinators
Buzzing bees and beautiful butterflies pay frequent visits to gardens with Agapanthus flowers as their bell-shaped petals create the perfect place to rest and collect precious nectar. Planting with purpose for our pollinators will encourage a host of wildlife to your space which will help towards nature restoration and help pollinate plants on your patch!
Seed heads for structure
When the flowering season is over, your Agapanthus plant will still look great even when it goes to seed! Choose not to cut your stems in your Autumn tidy up, not only will this give the birds something to feast on in the winter months, but it gives you the chance to enjoy their texture and structure late into the sunny season.
