OUR MONTHLY GARDENING GUIDES
JOBS FOR October
The days might be getting shorter but these are exciting times to be in the garden! October is a great month to be tidying, planting and enjoying the beautiful Autumn sunshine, so our team at Tong have put together a quick guide to help you enjoy your garden this month!
Plant for structure
Now is an ideal time to plant shrubs and trees. With the soil still warm, it’s time to create structure in your garden by planting your hardy evergreen shrubs such as Azaleas, Skimmia and Hebes. Planting now will allow the roots to establish over winter and ensure strong, healthy new growth in spring.
PLANT SPRING BULBS
Our spring flowering bulbs are now in store and the choice is wonderful. Whether itʼs tulips, daffodils or snowdrops, these wonders work their magic over winter to bring a colourful display. We recommend planting in bulb fibre to encourage fast root growth.
Add winter colour
Brighten up your garden with beautiful bursts of winter colour from our seasonal selection of bedding plants. Pansies, Violas and Cyclamen will help bring your garden to life with that much needed splash of instant colour. Alternatively, pick up one of our gorgeous planted baskets or containers in store to inject some colour to your garden!
Lift Dahlia and Begonia tubers once the foliage has been blackened by frost and store them in a dry, frost-free shed out of direct light. You can also prune shrub roses by a third now to minimize winter damage.
CUT BACK PERENNIALS
Many herbaceous perennials benefit from being chopped back in autumn – so it’s a good time to cut the old foliage back to the ground to ensure fresh shoots the following spring.
PROTECT GARDEN BIRDS
Provide protection for garden birds through the winter months by providing a healthy supply of food and water. Feed our feathery friends with a high energy diet such including soft crumb mix and suet balls over the coming months and reap the rewards with a wildlife haven in your garden.
